Roulette Myths And Legends

Roulette is an age-old game that has come to be associated with numerous myths and legends. It is a game of pure chance and great mystery because of which it has attracted people who’ve tried to rationalize it either with mathematical calculations and science or with superstitious beliefs. Basically, it is human nature to rationalize everything. We refuse to believe that some things are indeed random and have no reason or logic behind them whatsoever!

Online roulette has no myths and legends of its own, so to say. It will probably take another century before we get to hear of some ‘online’ roulette myths. Whatever the myths and legends are, they come from real roulette version, whose history dates back to the 16th century.

As one common and very popular legend goes following the history of roulette, François Blanc who was the first casino owner, apparently sold his soul one night to the devil, in exchange for his soul he got the secrets of roulette. This legend comes from the fact that adding up all the numbers on the roulette table gives 666 which is the ‘devil’s number’. Due to its unpredictability, the roulette wheel is shrouded by mystery and devilish traits.

There are many myths that surround live roulette and you are indeed better off not following them. It is commonly believed on is that one can beat the house-edge by using a mathematical system like the D’alembert’s system, Labouchere system, The Five Number roulette system, Martingale system and many more such systems. You can easily find these systems online. These do sometimes yield good results but that is purely coincidental and the next time you may just lose like crazy using the very same system! Another myth that many believe in is that both the roulette wheels, European and American are one and the same. They are in fact not, as proven by simple calculations. Due to the different number of slots, in American wheels the house edge is 5.26% and in European wheels it is 2.70%.

There are yet more myths like the one about ‘sleeping numbers’. Its said that if you bet on the numbers or colours that haven’t turned out in last few spins, you have more chances of winning the next spin. In reality, there is no certainty that if the ball hasn’t landed on a red slot for last 13 spins it will land on it in the 14th or 15th or nth spin! In roulette, the spins are absolutely random with any game of live roulette and one outcome has no connection to its previous ones. Some people believe that by observing the patterns of outcomes, the next outcome can be predicted but this belief is absolutely baseless.
